Coming off a 24-point loss against Quinnipiac, the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats survived a late rally by Boston University to defeat the Terriers, 74-66, on Friday evening.
Down 14 points with 11:41 remaining in the game, BU (7-6) went on an 11-0 run to make it 55-52 with 7:06 left. The game remained a one-possession match with less than three minutes to go, but Bethune-Cookman (5-9) pulled away to secure to win.
The Wildcats attempted 32 free throws, tying the season-high BU allowed against New Hampshire. Junior guard Malik Maitland went 10-for-12 from the foul line, while senior guard Dondre Duffus added seven more off 11 attempts.
BU struggled offensively, shooting 40.9 percent from the floor but made up for it with 20 offensive rebounds. It was the first time the team recorded at least 20 rebounds since tracking became available in 2010-11, according to sports-reference.com.
Junior forward Max Mahoeny led the way with 17 points and 13 rebuonds. Fellow captain Tyler Scanlon added 14 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists, and was the only other Terrier in double figures.
